How the flooring cost is calculated

The floor area is the room length times the width. Add a waste allowance, price the material, then add the installation labor charged on the actual area:

Total = Area × (1 + Waste) × Material price + Area × Labor price

Material is bought with a waste allowance because some of every board, plank, or tile is cut off and discarded. Labor is usually charged on the room area, not the area with waste. Set the labor rate to zero if you are installing the floor yourself.

Worked example (Stand: 2026)

  • Floor area (12 × 15)180 ft²
  • MaterialLaminate, $3.00 / ft²
  • Waste allowance10%
  • Area with waste (180 × 1.10)198 ft²
  • Material cost (198 × $3.00)$594
  • Labor cost (180 × $2.00)$360
  • Total installed$954
  • Per square foot installed$5.30

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to floor a room?
Multiply the area by the material price plus a waste allowance, then add the labor. The calculator above does this for any room size, material price, waste, and labor rate you enter, and splits out materials and labor.
How much does flooring cost per square foot?
Materials only, as a 2026 guide: carpet 1.50 to 3 dollars, laminate 2 to 4, luxury vinyl plank 2.50 to 5, tile 3 to 7, engineered wood 4 to 8, and solid hardwood 6 to 12. Installation labor usually adds 1 to 5 dollars per square foot.
How much waste should I add?
About 10 percent for a normal straight layout. Use 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns, or a room with lots of corners, closets, and angles.
Is underlayment or removal included?
No. This is materials plus install labor for the new floor. Underlayment, removing the old floor, subfloor repair, and trim are extra. Add them to the material or labor price if your quote includes them.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
